Chief Executive Officer – CEO

Title: CEO, Agrecalc Limited

Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Location: Hybrid, base location Edinburgh

Closing Date: 25 October 2022

Competitive salary and potential for equity

We are looking for a vibrant Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with experience of the successful development of a Software as a Service (SaaS) business. Our product has an essential and vital purpose, to feed the world sustainably, providing growers, retailers, government and consumers with the information and actions they need to reduce the emissions related to food production.

Agrecalc already has traction in the market and widespread adoption. It’s now time to take the business model to the next stage of growth and we need a highly skilled CEO to unleash the potential of the product and the ambition of the team.

We cannot wait to meet you.

Agrecalc seeks a CEO to take forward the successful spin out of this market-leading resource efficiency and emissions calculator.

Agrecalc looks to build on the existing momentum it has in the marketplace. Already a successful revenue generating business with over 5,000 license users and a cloud-based solution, recruiting a CEO at this exciting time is the next step toward building a broader customer base and attracting investor backed funding.

You shall initially take the company forward to a seed funding round in Q2 2023 and beyond. During the period you shall define the strategy, drive commercialisation beyond the existing pipeline, build the SaaS platform and develop key stakeholder relationships across the UK, including key data exchange partners. You will build upon strong foundations and be well supported with expertise but also with the autonomy to lead.

This role comes at a critical time as Agrecalc becomes more sophisticated in terms of its offering. You shall take the business from commercial validation to high growth stage and in doing so fulfil its mission to feed the world sustainably by improving on farm efficiency and reducing emissions.

What is Agrecalc?

Agrecalc is an Agricultural Resource Calculator and is widely used by food producers to assess their resource efficiency and the related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Based on scientific evidence and latest research the tool promotes the efficient use of on farm resources as the method to assess and then drive down emissions. This approach sets it apart and opens up a wide range of markets, with many independent reviews placing Agrecalc at the top of the list when considering food related emissions. The tool can provide value to the entire industry, from Governments, to Retailers, to Processors and Growers. It operates at both macro and micro scales providing greenhouse gas insights, mitigation and audit capability.

The Agrecalc platform was developed by researchers and agricultural consultants at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). Agrecalc currently operates as an in-house service and is now being prepared to spin out in order to scale the software as a service business.

Given the accelerating challenges associated with climate change, the problem that Agrecalc solves is of international interest with a vast potential market opportunity. The cloud-based version of Agrecalc has great potential to expand both nationally and globally.

Our vision is that the entire Agricultural supply chain will utilise the platform, which has applications across the industry, to help define and reduce their carbon emissions and ultimately reach a net-zero future.

We seek a CEO to lead Agrecalc in its successful spin out and deliver on our ambition to be the leading platform for mitigating and reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving on farm productivity.

What we seek from you

As Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for the management of the operations of the new company as well as defining the vision for the next growth period. You will drive the funding strategy, securing external funding at key stages as the company seeks to scale and liaising with investors as the business progresses.

You will be expected to oversee all operations including team leadership, product development, sales, marketing and scientific research, the latter in partnership with SRUC. You shall build on the initial team of 7 FTE to add resources according to the chosen delivery and growth model. You will be expected to develop and approve strategies for the company as well as communicating these strategies to an internal and external audience.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the development of short and long-term strategy, ensuring alignment with short and long-term objectives
  • Making major corporate decisions, managing overall operations and resources
  • Communicating and building trusted relationships with shareholders, government entities, and the public
  • Maintaining awareness of the competitive market landscape, expansion opportunities and industry developments, identifying new markets and channels for growth
  • Business planning and budget, review of financial and non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements
  • Enforcing adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies
  • Leading the team in the development of a strong culture and behaviours based on vision, mission and purpose to build a high performing team
  • Make high-quality investment decisions to advance the business and drive growth
  • Develop effective working relationships with SRUC to support Agrecalc’s research requirements.

Application Deadline: 25th October 2022

Setting up a living lab with coppice willow for cattle grazing is something relatively alien in the British farming landscape. Professor John Gilliland shares the experience he synthesised and put to practice on his farm, with an aim to understand how willow grazing decreases methane emissions from ruminants and delivers other benefits, such as reducing runoff risk and preventing erosion in riparian strips.
