Join Agrecalc at Low Carbon Agriculture Show 2024

The Agrecalc team is looking forward to welcoming you at our stand (216) at this year’s Low Carbon Agriculture Show, taking place on March 6 and 7, at NAEC Stoneleigh near Kenilworth.

At this year’s Low Carbon Agricultural Show, at NAEC Stoneleigh near Kenilworth, the Agrecalc team will be demonstrating the newest edition of our Platform-as-a service, Agrecalc Cloud.

The team will also deliver a presentation on “Understanding the current levels and sources of emissions”, during the Carbon Farming Session on Tuesday, March 6, at 3 PM.

Presentation on determining current levels and sources of emissions

Julian Bell, Agrecalc Agriculture Director and Principal Consultant, is presenting at the event’s Environmental Business live seminar, and participating as a member of a panel consisting of agriculture and policy subject matter experts.

He will be joining the Chairperson, Delyth Lewis-Jones, Head of Environment for AHDB, James Elliot, Senior Policy Advisor from Green Alliance, Ian Thompson, Associate Director with Laurence Gould Partnership, and Andrew Ferguson, Partner and General Manager with The Waitrose and Partners Farm, Leckford Estate. The full conference programme is available on the Low Carbon Agriculture Show website.

Agrecalc is also sponsoring the session, taking place at LCA Seminar 2.

Mr Bell said: “During the session I plan to demonstrate how knowing your numbers, and making sure you’re operating efficiently helps farmers get ahead of the game and own their own carbon story. What we’re always trying to do is put the tool into the farmers’ hands, so that they can understand the data that they own better.

We report results at the whole farm, enterprise and product level. This approach is complemented by benchmarking emissions and pinpointing hotspots, facilitating the identification of areas for targeted mitigation actions. The best baseline is yourself, especially as you follow your results from year to year.

He will be supported by Dr Rachael Ramsey, Head of Science and Research, as an agroecology science expert to whom questions can be directed during the Q&A.

Agrecalc Cloud a significant advancement from its predecessor

Agrecalc is dedicated to providing farmers and the broader industry with the most robust and widely accepted scientific methods to confidently identify their emissions and pinpoint areas for reduction.

Agrecalc has welcomed the DEFRA report on harmonisation, and is taking multilateral collaborative steps towards improving consistency across farm carbon reporting tools. The DEFRA report covers Agrecalc version 1 only, which will be sunset during 2024, and all the users are in the process of moving to our brand new, state-of-the-art platform, Agrecalc Cloud – which adheres to all the points DEFRA’s report highlighted.

Agrecalc Cloud has already adopted standardised databases for emission values, in alignment with the specifications outlined in the report. Coupled with planned developments in the coming months, this evidences a significant advancement from our initial platform, as scrutinised in the DEFRA report, and positions us closer to the harmonised approach advocated in the report.

A crucial guidance through agricultural transition

Following last year’s strategic acquisition of LCA from Renewable Energy Events, the show is now organised by Agriconnect, the UK’s largest agricultural information business, powered by Farmers Guardian and supported by other Agriconnect brands.

With sustainability and net zero at the forefront of emerging legislation in the agricultural sector, the LCA Show 2024 is poised to guide farmers and landowners through the energy, environmental, and farming transition. Governments worldwide are aligning farming policies with environmental best practices, amplifying the need for information and solutions. LCAS provides crucial guidance to businesses navigating the evolving landscape of sustainable farming practices and planning.

Scott Davies, Agrecalc CEO, said: “This is a fantastic show that addresses the agrifood sector’s growing appetite to invest in meaningful emissions mitigation. The show has a very good mix of exhibitors ranging from electric vehicles to renewables and data, as well as a comprehensive range of speakers in the three seminar streams.

“The UK is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 and the agricultural sector is uniquely placed to be part of the solution. Agrecalc will be there to explore the ways our clients and partners can measure, benchmark, and lower the carbon footprint on farms and land-based businesses, as well as throughout the entire food supply chain.”

The event is free to attend – users can register on the organisers’ registration page.

Coppice willow for cattle grazing – a way forward in methane reduction

Setting up a living lab with coppice willow for cattle grazing is something relatively alien in the British farming landscape. Professor John Gilliland shares the experience he synthesised and put to practice on his farm, with an aim to understand how willow grazing decreases methane emissions from ruminants and delivers other benefits, such as reducing runoff risk and preventing erosion in riparian strips.
